Use the right light for the job

A headlamp is best when your hands need to work: cooking, walking, repairing, or finding a dropped item. A lantern is better for shared space, where one narrow beam would be annoying.

Most weekend camps are easier with both, but they do not need to be complicated. One dependable headlamp and one soft area light cover many situations.

Keep brightness under control

Very bright light can ruin night vision and bother nearby campers. Lower settings are often enough for camp tasks, and they preserve battery life.

A red or warm low mode is helpful around tents, especially when people are settling down for the night.

Make backup power obvious

Store spare batteries or a small power bank in the same place every trip. Backup lighting is not useful if nobody remembers where it is.

Before leaving home, turn each light on briefly. It is a tiny check that prevents one of the most common camp frustrations.
